2007: More Web Design Trends & Cliches (ModernLifeIsRubbish)

It's been well over a year since I compiled the original list of web cliches, so I figured it was time to revisit some of the trends currently prevalent in web design now.
Things have definitely moved on since last year; Web 2.0 is not so _en vogue_ as it was, instead being replaced with richer colours, rougher textures and (on average) fewer rounded corners.
So what trends have emerged? What's hot, inspiration wise?
Odd one, this. Seems the current _trend du jour_ is to employ a cutesy vectoresque graphic character. This fits in with the tendency to use strong colour and graphical elements in the current crop of designs rather well.
The human element of the cartoon also serves as a fashionable replacement for the cliched stock imagery of yore – no longer do you need a photograph of a woman talking on a phone to convey what your business is about. These days, you can utilise a cartoon character to achieve the same effect.
Examples: Elitist Snob, Freelance Switch, sr28, Global Zoo, Wishlistr, and NetNova.
The world of web design has seen some sweeping changes since its inception years ago – many of the limiting …

Freelance Graphic Designer Jobs?

Im just wondering if there is anybody that does freelance graphic design work from home im looking to start a business for myself from home any advice about how to get started or if you need a freelance/work from home graphic designer please contact me

Posted by Raff

If you want to make money online, go for freelancing jobs. The Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities, expanding markets and helping to build it into one of the largest economic segments for many economies. You dont need to pay to get the job. Development for freelancing has been especially high for software development, website design, information technology, and business documentation. Freelance practice varies greatly. Some require clients to sign written contracts<!–while others may perform work based on verbal agreements, perhaps enforceable through the very nature of the work. Some freelancers may provide written estimates of work and request deposits from clients. Get more information on the website. You can almost find any freelance job you want.

Payment for freelance work also varies greatly. Freelancers may charge by the day or hour, or on a per-project basis. Instead of a flat rate or fee, some consultants have adopted a value-based pricing method–>based on the perceived value of the results to the client. By custom, payment arrangements may be upfront, percentage upfront, or upon completion. For more complex projects, a contract may set a payment schedule based on milestones or outcomes.

Freelance Graphic Designer rates?

I was asked to take on a marketing project for a company that my friend works for.
They are looking for someone to design a simple postcard and are wondering what my rates are for this.
I haven't ever charged since I typically have used projects like this for building my portfolio. What would a designer charge for a project like this?
Please advise! Thank you!

Posted by h3lpm3

Freelance designers charge lots of different rates based on their cost of living, geographic location, and competitors. Some will charge a flat hourly rate, others will charge different rates for different kinds of jobs. I never know what to charge when I started my freelance business. I undercharged for everything because I didn't know any better. I started out charging 35/hr which I thought was great, but other freelancers were charging 95/hr for the same work. It's easy to underestimate your market worth sometimes. Especially if you're just starting out. But if you really know your stuff, you have a specialized skill that others need to pay for.

Take some time to think about what you think is fair. Only you can decide that. What price is worth your time?

Tattoo designs ideas/websites?

I need a website that can either, 1) get my tattoo designs i requested in less then an hour. 2) i need a site that has a list of FULL designs on paper that are large. I can also use some ideas. I want the tattoo on my wrist/forarm maybe a band around my wrist/forarm (It would have to be on a full piece of paper) or somethign relegious

Iv been to sites but they charge you to get the image. You can only see an image 10×10 and it has the logo over it.

I need it on a large piece of paper so the artist can see the whole thing clearly without the logo accross it from whomever made it
In option one, i was wondering if there was a site that i can just scroll to the things im looking for like kinda browse. And it recommends tattoos for me. Mmm i need an actual picture. Not just a picture of a tattoo on skin.

Posted by CrunK

I don't quite understand your option 1). – do you mean a website where you can make a request and have an artist draw it up for you in less than an hour? If so, why the rush? That's obviously not a possible option.

The reason why most of the flash sites ask for money is because somebody out there has worked hard to make that design – why should you get it for free? Would you expect to walk into an art gallery and be donated a painting for free? Well someone has put the same level of time and effort into one of those flash designs. If you want this tattoo bad enough, you'll invest in getting it right, not try to scab out of paying what you can. Are you one of these clients that haggles with their tattoo artist to get a lower price, too? Not cool.

You can try for designs. But ALWAYS ask before you use anything. That is a website for people to display their artwork. NOT a website for people to come and take things as they please. Many people on there are happy for people to take their work and will say so, they find it an honour when someone wants their work on them. Others are dead against it, they want it to be personal to them, and they have that right. Imagine you put your blood, sweat and tears into designing a beautiful piece, perhaps as a tribute to someone you love or some other significant reason, only to find some mindless idiot has ripped it off. That's completely against tattoo etiquette so I really hope you possess some morals.

But honestly, the best you could do is go and see your artist, explain what you want and have him/her draw up a custom design for you. Then you're not treading on anybody's toes, and it shouldn't cost you a great deal if you actually get the tattoo there afterwards. (Some artists don't even charge at all, if you get the design inked on the same day, some wrap it into the overall price).

Questions and Answers

Web page designing.?

I am considering doing a web design course, do you consider it to be a viable and profitable bussiness to be in, and how competitive do you think the market is at the moment.
I was told that Dream weaver should be the initial path i should take as an introductory course.

What say you, many thanks for answering.
Well, what can i say: i certainly did not expect the responses to be so quick and thorough, extremely helpful and proffessional.
Thank you.
I have just looked on the HTML made easy page, and i think i may need another degree in how to implement there tutorial, However, i also browsed the Web 2.0 template monster site, and was very impressed with the innovative ideas, and the ease of the applications.
Thanks again.

Posted by stepney_lad

1. Web "page" design is not a profitable business: it pays less than 15$ per page: tooooo much competition!
2. To make it "profitable", you have to make sites that you can charge 2-5000$, and write them in a few weeks.
This means Web 2.0 designs, AJAX, full interactivity, e-commerce, Content Management System etc.
This eliminate completely the use of ANY WYSIWYG editors such as DreamWeaver (reserved for amateurs who can't code). Whatever anyone tells you, NONE of these can cope with any of the demands you will face.
Your tools: Notepad or Notepad++.
Your skills: (X)HTML, javascript, PhP, mySQL, AJAX, Photoshop, ASP, JSP, Perl, (+ all window skills).
Start with Dreamweaver and you will end up in a total dead end in two years, incapable of progressing, incapable of coding properly, incapable of beating the (fearce) competition.
3. Finally, forget "web design". Go for "Web 2.0 Application Design". An application is a complex program, using several languages, that just happens to run on a server to allow multi-user access. Think of your bank: every till is a PC. They all run the same program, on the SAME server. So, what you pay on till 1 is instantly credited to your account, visible on till 2. Or a stock control between offices separated by miles (or continents!)
THESE are applications. You develop them in a few MONTHS (not hours), and you can charge them reasonnably.
(because you are one of the VERY FEW good programmers among the millions of amateurs!)
Good luck.

Where can I find the best web designer/seo manager? Honest and trustworthy?

I need a new webmaster and SEO manager
you mean that's it? There's no one?

Posted by foreverfreerepublic

If you are looking for a web designer I would be the last to give you a good advice. But with regards to SEO you would be surprise to know that YOU alone would be the best SEO manager.

Though there are few seo basic to keep in mind while designing a website like:

1. Choosing a popular keyword that is low in competition

—use Google adwords keyword tool
—In 'result tailored to' click edit and select 'world /all countries'
—type in a keyword related to your market or niche
—enter the capcha word and click 'get keyword ideas'
—once the result shows you you should select 'Exact'
—this option is found in the right hand corner just above the keyword results
—Select a keyword that has good number of monthly searches
—Avoid those with high competition
—select the keyword and type in on Google search with quotes E.g. "web designers in US"
—see how many websites are competing against each other on the keyword "web designers in US"
—If you think the keyword is good enough for you then choose that as your main keyword (Keyword less than 10000 searches per month is easy to dominate)

2. Now for website Search Engine optimization:

Look for the following fields and add your keywords
<meta name="Subject" content="THE NATURE OF YOUR WEBSITE">

<meta name="keywords" content="YOUR KEYWORD1, YOUR KEYWORD 2, YOUR KEYWORDS 3">

<meta name="Revisit-after" content="NUMBER OF DAYS">

<meta name="Rating" content="GENERAL">

<meta name="Author" content="YOU">

<meta name="Classification" content="BUSINESS OR PERSONAL">

2. Populating your web content with the keywords in proportionate percentage.

3. Adding your keywords in the page title

4. Add fresh content to your website.

—Minimum 3 pages per week for next 3 months.

5. Write articles related to your niche and distribute them to the top article directories.

—Anchor text your keywords. E.g. <a href=http://www.YOUR DOMAIN.COM">YOUR KEYWORDS</a> in the authors resource box.
See mine for example: Http://…

6. Create as many backlinks as you can by enrolling yourself on social networking sites and leaving your web url

7. These are all you really need for a good SEO.

I hope it helps.

Processor or Video Card?

I’m do a lot with computer graphics/graphic design. I need a computer that moves graphics fast. Which computer is better for me and why? Please give your source.

1. The desktop PC with a faster processor (Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600), but a mid-range video card (Radeon HD 2400 XT, 12.8 GB/sec).

2. The desktop PC with a slower processor (Intel Pentium 4, 2.40 GHz), but a high-range video card (GeForce 8600 GT, 22.4 GB/sec)

Posted by emmy

#1 is the best. Most of you limits on speed will be the rendering calculations and format conversions that are CPU intensive. This makes the processor the most important. The Core 2 Quad 6600 is 623% faster than the Pentium 4, 2.4GHz.

In addition the Core 2 Quad is probably the best processor available for overclocking though I do not recommend overclocking for most people.

I recommend you also have 2 to 4 GB of 800MHz or faster Dual Channel RAM. Read following article
Hardcore DDR2 RAM by Corsair, G.Skill, OCZ and Patriot

The NVIDIA 8600GTS is 41 % faster an only $53 more than the Radeon HD 2400 XT. The difference will probably will not be very noticeable unless you play the latest games.

If you are a gamer spend the extra money and get the NVIDIA 8800 GTS or at least get the 8800 GTS.

It seems strange to buy an extreme Quad Core system and then get cheap on the video card. Video cards are easily changed later.

CPU Performance Index (minutes:seconds):
Lower time is faster

Pentium 4 2400 MHz Performance Index: 5:40 (est)
Pentium 4 2800 MHz Performance Index: 4:56
Pentium 4 3600 MHz Performance Index: 3:51
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2400 MHZ Performance Index: 0:47

5:40 = 340 sec
0:47 = 47 sec
340/47= 7.23 (7.32-1)*100% = 632%
The Core 2 Quad 6600 is 623% faster than the Pentium 4, 2.40 GHz

Estimate for the Pentium 4 2400 MHz (2.4GHz) based on 2005 tests listed here:
Video Card Performance

My opinion for a new video card:

For playing the latest advanced games a FRAPS (frames per second) of 50 or higher (80 or higher ideal)
For moderate games a FRAPS of 30 or more.
For simple games or no games a FRAPS of 18 or more
Refer to:
FRAPS (frames per second); higher is better per

ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT ($77) FRAPS = 38 est.

NVIDIA 8800GTS ($250) FRAPS=102.2

Resume HELP?

I have NEVER written a resume and have no clue how to even start but I need to do one TONIGHT! I have a pretty awesome job right now but with gas prices I cant afford the 40 mile drive one way twice a day anymore and there is a killer gov. Contracting job out at the military hospital that I want to put in for. Anyhow…are there any free sites online that can give me like a resume layout, maybe even like a step by step builder that is easy to follow and I can print at the end??

Posted by curiositykilledthecat

Besides setting all margins to 1", the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is "scanability." Here are some helpful tips:

1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as "Confidential Resume,"Do Not Contact Current Employer," etc.
2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer;
3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned;
4. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.;
5. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left;
6. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly;
7. Do not place an i.d. Picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues;
8. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase;
9. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc.

In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. If the original resume was created in Word, WordPerfect or Mac Appleworks, it can be Saved As a PDF file which then can be saved as an email attachment. Otherwise, you can simply use a scanner and scan a hard copy of the resume and then save as a PDF file.

Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries.

Good luck!

Are today's grads worse off than their parents?

I know about HTML , XML , CSS , XSL. Do i need to know about dream waver and other extra program to design good web page. If yes then which all program should I know to become a good web designer?
Learning java script will it be advantage?

Posted by rohan

The term 'web designer' is a misnomer these days, almost as obsolete as webmaster. Are you considering the creative side or the dev side? If you are planning to work as a creative web designer, learn to live in photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator and Flash.

If you already code in html, xml, css, etc, you wouldn't have much use for Dreamweaver, except to use it as a text editor. Some clients or companies may require you to develop in Dreamweaver, FrontPage or other wysiwyg editor because other non-coders may be maintaining the site.

Software will not make you a good web designer. Investing thousands of hours into practicing your craft will. Start designing and building web sites. Start with a portfolio site for yourself. Then, if you can't find any clients at first, find an organization that will let you design and build a web site for them free of charge…your church, school or favorite charity organization.

Create practice projects and post them on your personal web site. Employers pay less attention to work experience than they do the quality of the work.

Best of luck.

What skills makes Both Web Designers and Developers Different .Lets Look for the answer
Technical – Just creativity and imagination is not enough to come up with good designs. A designer needs to have technical expertise in tools that can be used to come up with awe inspiring designs.

A web designer need not to know the code. Today many people tell themselves as web designers. This is true also in the sense that they can design websites without having knowledge of coding. They can design websites by using tools available on internet to create websites or by using CMS. They can know coding or can not also.

But web developers must know coding to develop websites. Coding knowledge may be of any language like PHP, Ruby, Java, HTML etc. Because without having knowledge of coding, one can design websites but not perfectly as his/her need. He/she can have to compromise with design and functionality also. But, having coding knowledge, he/she can make websites according to their need…

Bicycles, Drum Kits and Science Inspire New Lighting Designs [NYCxDesign] (psfk)

Lighting was the hot category to exhibit during NYCxDesign 2014. The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) at Javits started to look more like a giant lighting showroom with companies presenting all types of pendants, task, table and floor lamps. Beyond ICFF, we found some interesting lights that showcased technical innovations and inspired design approaches. The following are the new lighting ideas that grabbed our attention the most:
_Crash &_ _Bell_ by Foscarini for Diesel
Taking inspiration from a rock band's drum kit, _Crash &_ _Bell _pendant lights that mimic their percussion instrument counterparts in shape and texture. Each is designed with a blown glass bulb holder that casts light across the outside metal surface as well as downward from inside the shade. Unfortunately you won't get the same sonic effects when you hit these with a drumstick.

_Spokes_ by Foscarini
You've probably already deduced the inspiration from these large scale pendant lights. But bicycles weren't the only object that inspired the shape, antique oriental lanterns and aviaries are also cited. The technical magic part of these lamps are the lack of visible wires connecting the power cable at the top to the LED bulbs in the bottom. Light is …

Graphic design for a magazine company?

I am not sure if a graphic design would be the word i am looking for but what i want to do is like design like the cover and like pages for a magazine. But i would just like some info on it, any would be good, and also i am in yr 10 so should i start putting a portfolio together, if so what do i put in there, i dont really do much at school so what can i do at home to add to it, maybe some people who do this job and can give me some info would be really good. Or u can email me and how would i get job and stuff like that.
Thanks to any answers.

Posted by Kellie

Yes, Graphic Design would be the right career field if you want to design for a magazine company. I was a Design Intern and got to create some of the pages to a few magazines. Other titles include Associate Art Director and Art Director, but those are higher ranked positions and require more experience in the field.

In order to work for many magazines you'll have to probably get a Graphic Design degree, which means going to college and studying the design basics. It isn't as easy as you may think to design spreads, especially if you have no prior experience. Besides knowing how to use the design basics effectively, you'll have to be proficient in the design programs as well (Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, etc.).

I started putting my portfolio together in my last year of college, when I had a more work done and had become more knowledgeable about design and how to put together a portfolio.

You might want to try finding an internship first at a publication company so you can get your foot in the door and that way you can figure out whether or not you will actually enjoy being a designer.

Info about Graphic Design?

I might be interested in graphic design but I'm not quite sure I know what it is all about. My idea of it is basically making graphics and layouts for web 2.0 style sites. You'll need programs like Illustrator, Flash, Photoshop, etc.

Can someone help me by describing a little more into detail about what a graphic designer is responsible for. Maybe give some of the bad side of it as well, I think that would help.

Thanks for any help, and I will be sure to pick a best answer.

Posted by Stranger Danger

Graphic design you can do much more then web layouts, you actually dont have to do anything web related if you choose too. You could design logos only, advertisements, signs, posters… Graphic design is the combination of images and type, so the projects are endless. Just about every company has their designer or designers.

Programs learn as many as you can, it never hurts you to know more and will help you with increasing your $ cha-ching!

When you first start out you will be a "jr designer" this position will be doing page layouts, logo designs, re drawing logos, lots of type corrections, business cards, mostly things that a senior designer or the art director dont want to do or have time to do. Granted that is if you work for a agency or some sort of company where there is the chain of command.

Once you get experience and you develop a professional portfolio you will start working on more advertising campaigns, dealing with clients directly and being much more of the creative process vs just getting the ideas dropped in your lap, this a very vague explanation so you know.

As far as down sides well, when starting off the pay can be lower then you would hope for many times. But then you have to keep your job description in mind sometimes, you get paid to make pretty images and create things, so to me that is a fair trade vs digging a ditch all day. But the money will come with time, more experience.

If you choose freelance well its feast or famine for many when starting. So be prepared to network, cold call, etc. And most likely have a part time job doing something else till you acquire some repeat clients and steady flow.

Hope this helps some, good luck and have fun!!!
